YESTERDAY may have been the day for lovers in Western tradition but in Chinese tradition it was un lucky, so registry offices were not besieged with couples seeking to tie the knot.
Only 158 couples were married yesterday, a 25 per cent drop from the 209 on the same day last year.
Fung shui master Au Chung-tak said February 14 this year was one of the "broken" days that occur two or three times a month, and which are not regarded as aus picious for events such as weddings.
While safety is not threatened, people are prone to mishaps such as losing their keys, getting into arguments, being caught in traffic jams or suffering cuts and bruises, said Mr Au, who runs the Hong Kong Fung shui and Fortune telling Centre.
The Valentine's Day peak for marriages was 230 in 1995. Despite the inauspicious signs, some couples went to great lengths to ensure a Valentine's Day marriage. |
